racism, class, people

August 27, 2006

on tis american life, a black woman in france relates:

she is not treated as black, but american.  as a black, the french people are NOT afraid of her! (she expected white people to be bluffed)the french don’t like their own blacks.  if she is mistaken for a native french person, she does not get special treatment, and might be mistaken for someone from a black colony.

here in America, we are trained, expected to fear the violence of blacks.  All blacks get that just as all whites get some non fear benefit. Here in American, blacks are outsiders, largely.  And poor.  And uneducated. And I notice that blacks from Somalia feel nicer, more interesting, they speak another language and have a lovely accent for English.

It is not race: it is a cue to class.  Like hispanic is a cue to class (noisy gatherings, loud music, probably illegal, bad English), Jews (money, etc)…

And what if each society WILL have various classes, a tendency toward classes. We are fighting racism, but it is classism, and why not?  Why should it NOT be there?  We cannot excape our families. Our classes.
